Galt MacDermot Still Rockin’

March 24, 2009

Galt MacDermot, the composer of Hair the Musical’s awesome rock score, is to celebrated his 80th birthday on December 18 2008 in grand style with a sterling concert in his honor at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, on Staten Island.

MacDermot was delighted to see a production of Hair by The Public Theater, moved to Broadway, and it was a fitting tribute to one of the originals who made Hair possible. Hair at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre is doing a roaring business; Hair the Musical tickets are smashing the box office. With a score including classics such as “Aquarius,” “Let the Sun Shine In,” and “Good Morning Starshine,” Hair the Musical takes audiences on a real trip into the past and into themselves. The adventurous  Hippies’ free-thinking lifestyle embraces Peace and Love with a morally battered and war-torn America providing a stark contrast. Hair tickets’ popularity proves how things move in cycles; we’re back at Square One once again and everyone is seeking answers. Buy Hair tickets and discover how a brilliant musical, first staged 40 years ago, can provide them. Human problems are timeless, and the tribe who embraced hair, with its psychedelic experimentation and quasi-mystic leanings, have stood the test of time like few others.

All the more amazing that an 80-year old composer is still around to witness the effects his score has on young people, most of whom rush out to buy the Hair soundtrack after seeing this production. The Hair on Broadway schedule at New York’s Hirschfeld Theatre is racing up the Broadway charts and providing a colorful and nostalgic twist to a night at the theater. Be one of the newly-converted; buy Hair tickets and see this life-changing production soon.
